ABOUT

Propelled by the energy and success of the New Ear Festival and the spatial sound series CT::SWaM [Contemporary Temporary:: Sound Works and Music]. New Ear is focused on fostering experimentation in time-based media and interdisciplinary collaboration in New York City and beyond. New Ear supports artists at all stages of their careers with workshops and mentorship, access to specialized equipment and engineering support, and opportunities to present their work, create new connections with artists and audiences. New Ear has built a diverse audience, continuing to offer an ever-expanding year-round program of experimental and dynamic slate of performances, media installations, and related visual art exhibitions. We partner with arts organizations—locally, nationally, and internationally—to bring underrepresented artists to New York audiences. As an additional resource, we offer organizations consulting services for spatial and multidimensional presentations.

Building from the history of visual artists opening their homes and studios to musicians, dancers, and performers, New Ear creates a space for spirited and radical experimentation. At New Ear, risk-taking is celebrated, collaborations are nurtured, and community is formed around challenging artistic encounters.

HISTORY
New Ear began in 2013 as a performance program, intermedia festival, and vinyl-record imprint around Fridman Gallery’s exhibition calendar. Since then, it has come to occupy a unique space in New York City’s cultural landscape as one of the most robust, and committedly experimental, live-arts programs situated within a visual art context.

Since its inception, New Ear has been driven by artists’ visions and the goal of honoring—and expanding—the tradition of experimental music, sound art, and performance. Building from the history of visual artists opening their homes and studios to musicians, dancers, and performers, New Ear seeks to create a space in which spirited and radical experimentation is celebrated, collaborations are nurtured, and community is formed around challenging commitments and questions.

New Ear’s programming has included such luminaries as David Tudor, Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Lucier, Simone Forti, Robert Whitman, Fred Moten, William Parker and outstanding younger performers such as Black Thought, Irreversible Entanglements, Lesley Flanigan, Stephen Vitiello, Yvette Janine Jackson, and Abigail Levine.

We support and collaborate with prominent cultural organizations, such as Issue Project Room, Wave Farm, The Kitchen, Pioneer Works, Public Re
cords, and Roulette Intermedium.
