Fridman Gallery presents a performance at our Beacon location featuring experimental electronic musician Lesley Flanigan (NYC) at 8 pm and sound artist Mark Trecka (Beacon) at 9 pm. The event is co-presented with the Howland Cultural Center and will take place outside on the lawn next to the gallery. It is the second in a series of live performances happening on the first Saturday of each month.
Lesley Flanigan is an experimental electronic musician living in New York City. Inspired by the physicality of sound, she builds her own instruments using minimal electronics, microphones and speakers. Performing these instruments alongside traditional instrumentation that often includes her own voice, she creates a kind of physical electronic music that embraces both the transparency and residue of process — sculpting sound from a palette of noise and subtle imperfections.
Her work has been presented at venues and festivals internationally, including The Red Bull Music Festival at Saint John the Divine (New York), De Doelen (Rotterdam), Sonar (Barcelona), The Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park (Chicago), the Guggenheim Museum (New York), The Kitchen (New York), The Broad Museum (Los Angeles), ISSUE Project Room (Brooklyn), TransitioMX (Mexico City), CMKY Festival (Boulder), the Roskilde Museum of Contemporary Art (Denmark) and KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin.
Mark Trecka is a Chicago-born writer, sound artist, performer, and activist. His work utilizes intermedia techniques, engaging various juxtapositions of text and sound to explore both explicit and implied meaning. His second full-length solo recording, Acknowledgment is out on May 28, 2021 on Whited Sepulchre Records.
Trecka has collaborated with Susan Alcorn, Raven Chacon, Midwife, A-Y/dancers, Audra Wolowiec, Drekka, and others. Other recordings, Everything Falling Crosses Over and In Ellipsis Landscapes were released on Orphanology and The Flenser in 2019 and 2020, respectively. In addition to recorded music, live performance, and printed work, Trecka has been exploring the realms of intermedia broadcast experiments, working with Radio alHara and Radio Coyote throughout 2021. Trecka founded Pillars and Tongues in 2007 and toured and recorded with Dark Dark Dark from 2009 to 2014. He is the co-founder and lead organizer of the Beacon Prison Books Project, a volunteer-run solidarity program that provides free books to people incarcerated throughout New York State, where Trecka currently resides.
